Syllabus

The student is expected to demonstrate knowledge related to:
- Methods of treating different orthodontic and orthopaedic malocclusions;
- Understanding of systems to identify skeletal maturation of patients;
- Understanding of the biomechanical rules governing tooth movements;
- Recognizing and diagnosing joint problems;
- Communication techniques with the patient suffering from temporomandibular dysfunction;
- Application of behavioural norms to manage articular dysfunctions.
xEpected learning outcomes (Dublin descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding:
The student has the specific orthognathodontic knowledge to manage real clinical cases. He/she has knowledge of multiple therapeutic techniques for the orthodontic management of different dental and skeletal malocclusions, understanding of growth patterns and timing of intervention, orthodontic biomechanics and dental anchorage. The student knows how to recognise joint dysfunctional problems of own or musculoskeletal origin. He/she has basic knowledge of orofacial pain therapy and management of the gnathological patient.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The student is able to plan orthodontic intervention whether purely dental or orthopaedic of the jaw bones. He/she is able to apply counselling methods to the patient with articulated disorders and plan therapy.
Autonomy of judgement:
The student is able to interpret clinical and instrumental signs of orthognathodontic problems in order to correctly plan a treatment plan.
Communication skills:
The student will be able to discuss orthodontic and gnathological treatment plans with the patient using precise but simple terminology to establish effective and efficient communication during prolonged phases of treatment.
Learning ability:
The student is able to demonstrate that he/she has independently and profitably approached the systematic study of the discipline as well as having the skills to maintain a high profile in continuing education and training.

The student must have an adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general pathology of the stomatognathic system.

The aim of this course is provide the practical basis for the management of the orthodontic cases applying the knowledges of biomechanics and timing to handle malocclusions.

frontal lessons, clinical case discussions

no

The student's evaluation includes an oral examination in which clinical cases and no less than 6 open questions are proposed.
The student must demonstrate the ability to support an orthodontic discussion in terms of general knowledge of the discipline of gnathology and orthodontic therapy.
The examination is scored by a grade expressed in thirtieths. To pass the examination (18/30), the student must demonstrate at least sufficient knowledge in all the proposed questions. In contrast, to achieve the maximum score (30/30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all topics covered
during the course, answer all questions correctly and demonstrate excellent reasoning skills.
