Syllabus

The student is expected to demonstrate relevant knowledge of:
- Recognizing the anatomical structures of the masticatory system;
- Physiology of the temporomandibular joint
- General characteristics of clinical gnathology;
- Gnathological history, objective examination and instrumental examinations in gnathology
- TMJ dysfunctional syndromes and Bruxism
- Muscular dysfunctions of the temporomandibular joint;
- Orofacial pain
- Hints of occlusal therapy
Expected learning outcomes (Dublin descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding:
The student has the specific knowledge to recognize a problem with a gnathological etiology. He/she will be able to distinguish pathologies of the articulation proper or pathologies of musculoskeletal origin that lead to chronic orofacial pain.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to perform a correct and exhaustive objective examination of the head and neck region as well as to apply the main techniques for the management of temporomandibular dysfunctions in particular in the counselling part.
Autonomy of judgement:
The student should be able to evaluate instrumental examinations, clinical picture in order to draw up a correct diagnosis and apply the relevant treatment protocol.
Communication skills:
The student has the ability to interface with the patient with oro-facial pain and to communicate the main and fundamental behavioural norms in the management of TMD problems.
Learning skills:
The student is able to acquire information from the scientific literature to keep abreast of the therapeutic techniques of joint problems.

The student must have an adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general pathology of the stomatognathic apparatus.

GNATOLOGY
The aim of the course is to provide knowledges about the different functional units of the stomatognathic system and their physiological and pathological interrelationships. Basic informations on the clinical diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders and therapy notes are also provided.

The student's evaluation includes an oral test in which clinical cases and no less than 3 open-ended questions are proposed.
The student must demonstrate the ability to sustain a discussion in the field of gnathology in terms of general knowledge, diagnosis and treatment plan.
The examination is scored by a grade expressed in thirtieths. To pass the examination (18/30), the student must demonstrate at least sufficient knowledge in all the proposed questions. In contrast, to achieve the maximum score (30/30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all topics covered
