Second semester
Frequency Mandatory
- 5 CFU
- 73 hours
- Italian
- Trieste
- Obbligatoria
- Oral Exam
- SSD MED/28
Is part of:
The student must show relevant knowledge of:
- Differences between orthodontic and orthopaedic therapies
- Orthopaedic expansive therapies of the maxilla;
- Orthopaedic therapies for Class II malocclusions;
- Orthopaedic therapies for Class III malocclusions;
- skeletal growth maturation indicators;
- Orthodontic biomechanics;
- Anchorage in orthodontics;
- Clinical cases management.
Expected learning outcomes (Dublin descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding:
The student has the specific knowledge to be able to draw up a treatment plan appropriate to the specific malocclusion of each patient, discerning orthodontic approaches in growing patients or orthodontic relevance. The student has acquired skills in the biomechanics of tooth displacement and clinical management of intraoral forces.
Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
The student will be able to apply basic orthodontic appliances to manage cases of skeletal relevance.
Autonomy of judgement:
The student will be able to recognise the different clinical pictures of orthodontic malocclusions, proposing the most rational and correct therapeutic approach.
Communication skills:
The student has the ability to interface with colleagues, patients and parents of the same with simple but precise language to establish a fruitful collaborative relationship during prolonged orthodontic therapies.
Learning ability:
The student is able to acquire information from the scientific literature in order to keep up-to-date with regard to therapeutic techniques of orthodontic problems.
The student must have an adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and general pathology of the stomatognathic system.
The aim of this course is provide the practical basis for the management of the orthodontic cases applying the knowledges of biomechanics and timing to handle malocclusions. Students will learn the methods for the treatment of malocclusion with fixed and removable devices. The course will be a strong focus on the issue of the timing of treatment and the introduction of newer methods for the management of orthodontic anchorages.
The student will also be the first operator in the execution of orthodontic check-up.

The student's evaluation includes an oral test in which clinical cases, multiple answer test and no less than 3 open-ended questions are proposed.
The student must demonstrate the ability to support an orthodontic discussion in terms of general knowledge of the discipline and diagnostic procedure.
The examination is scored by a grade expressed in thirtieths. To pass the examination (18/30), the student must demonstrate at least sufficient knowledge in all the proposed questions. In contrast, to achieve the maximum score (30/30 cum laude), the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all topics covered.
The Student must register for the online appeal of the partial trial in ESSE3. The grade of the partial proof is valid until the extraordinary session of the relevant academic year.
