Syllabus

In the light of the aims outlined in the aims and objectives of the Ma degree, this course aims to present an advanced understanding of the core principles and topics of spaces and locations in literary texts. It designed to provide students with the opportunity to explore topics concerning the structural and narrative role of spatiality, both in geographical and cultural terms and in terms of micro-locations and domestic spaces, in order and to enable them to acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding of spatial dynamics in literature, also from the perspective of cultural and literary tourism and creative tourism. On completion of the course students should be able to analyse the selected primary sources in the light of the proposed theoretical and critical frameworks, to contextualize them and to articulate their critical analysis of the reading list in both synthetic and analytical frames. They are expected to be able to work independently and to develop basic research skills; to use evidence and secondary texts to motivate, structure and articulate a central claim or argument.

Course title: Joycean mysteries The course explores the significance of James Joyce's texts, Dubliners and Ulysses, and places them in its historical and cultural context. Through this study students will gain an awareness of the work's significance within the critical discourses of modernism and realism. The course will introduce students to one the most important English language novels of the twentieth century; to the political and social contexts of Joyces' texts in order to explore the narrative strategies and the effect of these on our methods of reading

The oral exam, which will take the form of a discussion with the examiner, will cover the topics and concepts covered in class and inspected in the bibliography and secondary texts. The aim of the exam is to test the depth and breadth of the student’s knowledge, to assess the students’ skills to critically analyze, discuss and evaluate the main themes of the course and to ascertain their ability to articulate an argument and communicate what they have learnt. The examination will last approximately 30 minutes.
