Syllabus

D1. Knowledge and understanding.
Students will learn about the main tenets of intersemiotic translation through theoretical and more practical sessions.

D2. Applying knowledge and understanding.
By the end of the course, students will be able to audio-describe different texts types by means of various techniques addressed during the course.

D3. Making judgments.
By the end of the course, students will have acquired knowledge for critically understanding, analysing and intersemiotically translate various text types

D4. Communication skills.
By the end of the course, students will be able to discuss their works both in written and in oral form.

D5. learning skills.
By the end of the course, students will have improved their translation abilities regarding various text types. Specifically, the following abilities will be developed:

-· an excellent command of language and conventions;
- the ability to summarise information in order to adapt the text to the limited space available, keeping the original meaning, by means of rewording and by using synonyms;
- the ability to adapt the linguistic style to the target audience and to the product, by mastering different linguistic registers.

In order to sit for Lingua Inglese 2, students need to have passed English Language 1 and English/American Literature 1.

ENHANCING LANGUAGE COMPETENCE THROUGH INTERSEMIOTIC TRANSLATION The main goal of the course is to enhance students’ expertise in the English language and linguistics by focusing on intersemiotic translation. Specifically, the ability to turn images into words both intralinguistically and interlinguistically in movies and TV shows will be addressed. By using Audio-Description techniques, the students will be encouraged to gain an excellent command of the language, in addition to mastering different linguistic registers. The lettorato part of the course aims at developing writing skills in a variety of texts. Students will develop the ability to employ a wide range of structures, devices and lexis to write well-organised and coherent texts that reflect real-life communication.

The course will be held in seminar mode. After introducing the field through some initial theoretical notions, students will be guided to produce their own audio-descriptions in class and become more independent in this skill. Students’ active participation is therefore crucial for following the course successfully. A laptop computer is recommended, but non-obligatory. Classes should be attended regularly. Questions and comments about the contents of the course are strongly encouraged. The CEL’s (Collaboratore esperto linguistico) lessons are essential for this course, therefore students are highly recommended to attend his/her classes.

Classes are held in person. Students with special needs (including those with disabilities, workers, athletes, adults, parents, and detainees) who are permanently or temporarily unable to attend classes in person due to particular circumstances, will be allowed to participate remotely upon request to the teacher. The request, for which the student takes full responsibility, should be sent via email to the teacher before the beginning of the course. Each participant in the seminar will be expected to demonstrate his or her participation in group discussions by completing the written tasks assigned weekly by the teacher. At the end of the course, each participant will be required to create the audio description of a movie extract assigned by the teacher, following the instructions introduced during classwork. Seminar assessment: class participation and written tasks presentation: 40%; final audiodescription: 60%. The lettorato part will be assessed through a written translation from Italian into English (1 hour). The final mark of the exam is an average of the two parts. The grading system ranges from 18/30 to 30/30 cum laude. To pass the exam, students must demonstrate sufficient competencies in textual analysis and linguistic knowledge across all sections of the exam. To achieve the highest score (30/30 cum laude), students must exhibit excellent linguistic knowledge, outstanding capacity for textual analysis, and the ability to accurately contextualize the excerpted passages throughout all parts of the exam. NB1: Students who are unable to attend the seminar will be required to write a longer audiodescription assigned by the seminar instructor. The grading system ranges from 18/30 to 30/30 cum laude. All the exams under 18/30 are considered as “not passing”. NB2: Students who wish to enroll for the exam can do so from three weeks to one week before the exam. Those who do not sign up in those dates will not be allowed to sit the exam. No exception will be made to this rule.
