KNOWLEDGE AND COMPRESSION
Defining and knowing the characteristics of the different organizational models that identify the approach to the surgical patient. Assessment of surgical patients and determine the peri-operative risk and priorities for the operating department hospitalization. Know and define the interventions suitable for the patient’s psycho-physical preparation for surgery to prevent post-operative complications. Know and describe the main critical situations during the intraoperative phase and the methods for continuous monitoring of vital functions. Know and define the various types of surgery considering the microorganism’s surgical site contamination. Know the main methods to prevent and recognize post-operative complications. Know the different types of vascular accesses, management, prevention and identification of catheter-related complications. Know the main models of mechanical ventilation and the identification and prevention of ventilatory-associated complications.
CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND COMPRESSION
Based on the previous and current clinical, psychological and social situation, Identify the correct organizational model of the surgical approach. Identify the peri-operative risk of complications. Identify and plan the various interventions to prepare the patient for surgery to prevent post-operative complications. Identify the most appropriate monitoring methods during the intra-operative phase and be able to identify situations of risk and impairment of vital functions. Identify the various strategies for preventing post-operative complications and the signs and symptoms that characterize them. Identify the most appropriate vascular access based on the patient's clinical situation and treatment plan; identify the correct prevention methods and diagnosis of catheter-related complications. Correctly identify the various modes of mechanical ventilation; prevention and recognition of complications associated with mechanical ventilation.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
Identify the clinical situations that characterize the different methods of surgical approach and access priorities as well as peri-operative risk. Correctly identify the interventions that describe the patient's preparation for surgery to prevent peri-operative complications and pre-operative clinical conditions. Identify the methods for monitoring intra- and post-operative vital functions and any critical issues that may be encountered. Identify the main post-operative complications and prevention and monitoring methods. Identify the correct endovascular device according to the patient's clinical situation and the therapeutic procedure. Knowing how to recognize the complications associated with intravascular devices and adopt measures to prevent their onset. Know how to assess the risks associated with invasive mechanical ventilation and prevent complications.
COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS
To know and use proper and appropriate technical-professional terminology to describe the health-highlighted problems, the identified objectives and the actions taken.
LEARNING SKILLS
To prepare the Profit Exam by programming and managing the study individually, based on the content of the lessons, the delivered teaching text, and the sources suggested for further study.

The material provided by the teacher

General Nursing care to elective, urgent, emerging surgical patients. Surgical patient assessment and anesthesiologic, surgical and post-operative care.
1. Organizational models in surgery: historical notes, ordinary hospitalization, day surgery (one-day surgery), outpatient surgery and fast-track surgery approach.
2. Definition of peri-operative nursing care: classification of the operative phases and priority of access to surgery.
3. Pre-operative nursing care: pre-operative nursing assessment; peri-operative risk assessment; patients' psycho-physical preparation and assignment of tasks to support staff. Cutaneous, gastrointestinal preparation, and prevention of thromboembolic events. Surgical wound classification, antibiotic prophylaxis and prevention of pulmonary complications. Support for informed consent and health legislation.
4. Vascular accesses: classification of vascular accesses, indications and post-implantation management. Prevention and control of catheter-related complications.
5. Intra-operative Nursing: intra-operative nursing care; continuous monitoring of vital functions; guidelines on peri-operative airway management; elective and rapid sequence induction and intubation and anaesthesia care: classification and type of surgical wound, stages and healing process.
6. Post-operative Nursing: post-operative nursing care; post-operative complications (timing and classification of fever, gastrointestinal complications, respiratory and cardiovascular complications, surgical wound dehiscence and infection. Surgical drainage, surgical wound management.
7. Principles of mechanical ventilation: principles of respiratory anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology; principles of post-surgical mechanical ventilation assistance.

Lectures with broad appeal to the interaction between students and teacher and discussion of clinical cases. Interactive frontal lessons with the aid of projections of files in Power Point or compatible format elaborated by the teacher.

At the end of the lessons, the didactic material will be provided. For the purposes of the final evaluation, it is essential to integrate such content with what was discussed in class. The power point presentations relating to the teaching units are available on the moodle@units and Microsoft Teams IT platforms.

Oral or written examination by formulating questions aimed at verifying whether the student has acquired the necessary knowledge to apply it to the clinical-care situation. The exam is considered to be overcome if the student acquires an assessment of not less than 18/30.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION MODE:
Written exam consisting of 16 multiple choice questions. Duration of the exam 1 hour. The final grade is expressed out of thirty according to the following criteria. For each question there are 4 answers where 1, 2, 3 or all 4 alternatives can be correct. There is never a chance that all 4 answers are wrong. If the correct answer is not identified, the candidate will receive 0 points, if the wrong answer is identified there will be a penalty of 25% of the total score of the question. 15 questions will have a score of 2 points depending on how many correct answers are identified. One question Will be scored 1 point.
ORAL EXAMINATION MODE
Oral exam with 3 open questions lasting about 15-20 minutes. Through the interview, on one or more topics of the program, the student's ability to have identified the correct approach methodology to the surgical patient in all phases that characterize the surgical process. The evaluation will be assigned based on the following criteria:
Insufficient: Little or no knowledge and understanding of the topics; limited capacity for analysis and synthesis, frequent generalizations of the required contents; inability to use technical language.
18-20: Just enough knowledge and understanding of topics, with obvious imperfections; just sufficient capacity for analysis, synthesis and independent judgement; poor ability to use technical language.
21-23: Sufficient knowledge and understanding of topics; sufficient capacity for analysis and synthesis with the ability to logically and coherently argue the required contents; sufficient ability to use technical language.
24-26: Fair knowledge and understanding of the topics; fair capacity for analysis and synthesis with the ability to rigorously argue the required contents; fair ability to use technical language.
27-29: Good knowledge and understanding of required content; good capacity for analysis and synthesis with the ability to rigorously argue the required contents; good ability to use technical language.
30-30 cum laude: Excellent level of knowledge and understanding of the requested contents with an excellent capacity for analysis and synthesis with the ability to argue the requested contents in a rigorous, innovative and original way; excellent ability to use technical language.
