After studying the following procedures, the student will be able to:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
• Describe the assessment actions to be carried out before starting the procedure itself;
• Identify the safety principles to be carried out during assistance maneuvers;
• Describe the rationale for the sequence of actions to be performed;
• Describe the risks and complications of the maneuvers, including the methods for their assessment and monitoring.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
• Assess any additional risks associated with the procedure (allergies to latex and / or antiseptics / disinfectants);
• Apply diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions with adequate monitoring and surveillance strategies;
• Identify the appropriate devices based on the clinical situation;
• Transmit all the necessary information to the subject undergoing the procedure, taking into account the clinical situation and the ability to understand;
• Perform the procedures safely;
• Properly dispose of the material used in compliance with the infectious and biological risk;
• Document the procedure on client’s record.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
• Choose the appropriate PPE and devices to ensure operator safety based on the clinical situation;
• Recognize the conditions that require repeating the procedure;
• Seek the doctor's opinion in case of pathologies that may hinder the execution of the procedures;
• Choose devices / materials based on the clinical situation and the peculiarities of the clients;
• Develop assessment skills in the management of positioned devices;
• Evaluate and intervene in case of complications.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
• Recognize the appropriate settings and timing for customer communications;
• Use the appropriate terminology for effective diagnostic and therapeutic nursing communication based on the interlocutor and his knowledge and skills;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of educational interventions aimed at the client in relation to the procedure and any precautions at the end of the procedure or for the management of the device.
LEARNING SKILLS
• Identify his/her training needs by planning further learning moments (additional workshops, tutorial sessions);
• Identify suitable sources for professional development based on the latest available guidelines.
For a better understanding of the topics covered in this course, the student should have a basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, intestinal, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems.
The teaching is preparatory to the Internship Exam
Study of the sequence of actions and their rationale for the following nursing procedures:
- Techniques of manual and assisted mobilization of the person
end Care postures
- Vital signs detection
- Collection of venous and capillary blood end Peripheral venous catheter placement
- Urinary catheterization
- Enema
- Airway aspiration
- Performing the electrocardiogram
The simulation laboratories within the Nursing Degree Program, together with theoretical lessons and clinical internships, represent a significant learning opportunity.
The course will cover the study of the sequence of actions and their rationale for the following nursing procedures:
Manual and assisted mobilization techniques of the person (bed/stretcher mobilisation, lying/sitting postural change, bed/wheelchair)
Care postures (supine, prone and side position, lateral safety position, semi-sitting Fowler, Sims, Trendelenburg/anti)
Detection of vital parameters (blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, peripheral oxygen saturation and body temperature)
Bladder catheterization with soft catheter (Foley): in male and female, with 1 and 2 operators
Enteroclysma (materials, execution technique, monitoring)
Venous and capillary blood sampling (materials and sampling techniques)
Peripheral venous catheter placement (materials, execution technique, monitoring)
Airway aspiration (nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal), materials, execution technique and monitoring)
Performing an electrocardiogram (materials and techniques)
The course includes frontal teaching activities, practical laboratory in small groups, with exercises on mannequins and dedicated frontal teaching simulators, integrated by individual study according to the indications and material provided by the teachers/tutors
The teacher could administer tests at the end of each topic to verify learning and facilitate the study of the subject. Not evaluative
The power point presentations relating to the teaching units can be found on the moodle@units
The teaching is preparatory to the Internship and Cognitive Tutoring Exam 1
Through a practical and oral exam with open-ended questions lasting approximately 15 minutes on topics covered in class and simulated in the practical laboratory.
The assessment will be Passed or Failed if the student demonstrates adequate knowledge, reasoning skills, and execution of the procedure in compliance with the principles of good healthcare practice and safety for the patient and the operator
