Syllabus

The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and develop awareness of the safety of patients, operators and the environment. At the end of the course, the student must be able to:

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Know the principles on which patient safety is based
Know the principles and actions for the prevention of healthcare-related infections.
Identify actions for the prevention of adverse events
Know the risks of accidents in care and assistance environments
Know how to dispose of medical waste according to current legislation

ABILITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Identify strategies for the prevention, early identification and management of risks related to the safety of clients
Correctly apply previously acquired knowledge of healthcare-related infection prevention
Design interventions that guarantee safety in the assistance and surveillance of the patients
Collaborate with health professionals in the prevention of safety-related risks, placing the assisted person at the center of the process.


AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
Establish priority interventions to ensure the safety of the client, justifying the selection criteria in the interventions to be activated on the individual client and / or in the management of multiple clients who manifest different clinical situations at the same time

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Know and use correct and appropriate technical-professional terminology, for effective communication in the entire work group and in the nurse-client relationship

LEARNING ABILITY
Prepare the exam by individually planning and managing the study based on the content of the lessons, the teaching material delivered and the sources suggested for further study

Comfort and safety for the patients:
Structural requirements of care and assistance environments
The microclimate and lighting in care and assistance environments
The hospital room and the bed unit
The identification of the client and the risks associated with the exchange of identities
Fire prevention and fire emergency management

Healthcare-related infections:
Mode of transmission of infections
Universal, standard and additional precautions
Sanitation, sanitization, disinfestation, disinfection, sterilization
Insulation measures

The prevention of adverse events:
Surveillance: continuous observation and assessment, recognition, interpretation, decision
Fall risk identification and prevention interventions
Indicators of change in the client's conditions
Early recognition of urgency / emergency conditions: rapid response systems and early warning scores (EWS)
Staffing: report of nurses to patients and nursing skill-mix
Documentation of assistance and deliveries

Accident risks in care and assistance environments:
Postures and aids for handling loads
Personal protective equipment (hands, feet, eyes, respiratory tract, head, body)
Devices for the prevention of accidental stings

Waste disposal in care and assistance environments:
Decree 219/2000
Non-hazardous medical waste
Dangerous non-infectious medical waste
Dangerous medical waste with infectious risk
Medical waste that requires special management systems

Lectures with extensive use of interaction between students and teacher, with the help of projections of files in power point format or compatible, processed by the teacher.

Oral exam, with 2 open questions, lasting 15-20 minutes.
Through the interview, on two of the topics of the program will be verified the ability of the/ a student/ ssa to identify the main risks in the workplace for patients, operators and the environment, the correct use of the Protective Equipment and the assessment scales, knowledge and understanding of the interventions necessary for the prevention of infections related to the assistance. The evaluation grid adopted is as follows: - Excellent (30 - 30 e lode): excellent knowledge of the topics, excellent language properties, excellent analytical ability; lo/la studente/essa is able to apply the theoretical knowledge brilliantly to concrete cases. - Very good (27 - 29): good knowledge of the topics, remarkable properties of language, good analytical ability; l/the student/she is able to apply the theoretical knowledge correctly to concrete cases. - Good (24-26): good knowledge of the main topics, discrete language properties; l/l student/it shows an adequate ability to apply theoretical knowledge to concrete cases. - Satisfactory (21-23): the student/student does not fully master the main subjects of teaching, even if they possess the fundamental knowledge; however, it shows satisfactory language properties and sufficient ability to apply theoretical knowledge to concrete cases. - Sufficient (18-20): minimal knowledge of the main topics of teaching and technical language, limited ability to apply theoretical knowledge adequately to concrete cases. - Insufficient: the student/student does not have an acceptable knowledge of the contents of the different topics of the programme
