Syllabus

The course explores the study of interior design as it pertains to the theme of hospitality, within the framework of architectural debate, from modern to contemporary. This is a vast field of study in which the theoretical and practical development of design intertwine with different ways of understanding architecture, studying it, and making it transmissible. Learning will take place through lectures and conferences addressing key themes in interior architecture, with particular attention to the application of hospitality to space, alternating between technical and theoretical aspects. The course aims to guide students in the acquisition of certain categories of observation and description of architectural cases through experience with the most basic tools that lead from conception to construction. Particular critical attention will be paid to the role and function of "composition" in the organization of conceptual material, from which, through actions of memory and invention, the processes of constructing the idea and the form of the void in interior architecture projects take shape. The course's primary objective is to provide a solid method that prepares students for the profession that will lead them to address and develop living spaces, spaces dedicated to hospitality, and spaces dedicated to consumption.

The course requires good skills in the use of bibliographic and documentary research tools, study skills and progressive attention span, digital drawing and modeling skills, and photo simulation skills. Only students in their second, third, fourth, and fifth years are eligible to participate. The maximum number of participants is 25, subject to availability.

TEXTILE ANATOMIES GELLNER AND ARIADNE'S THREAD Each year, the course focuses on a specific research theme related to interior design. This academic year, 2025/26, the course aims to develop design considerations related to the reinhabitation of places and spaces while preserving their original nature. In this specific case, the research focuses on the intrinsic potential of the architectural spaces of the ENI Colonia near Corte di Cadore, a 1950s project designed by architect Edoardo Gellner, inspired by the social initiatives launched by Enrico Mattei. The framework for implementation encompasses a specific, organic theme: reinhabiting these spaces without changing their nature, currently in ruins, through textile anatomy. Just as in the field of biology, biological tissues are identified: tissues composed of specialized cells and extracellular matrix that organize into organs to perform specific functions; In architecture, the textile theme combines new connective references and systems for reinhabiting spaces.

Teaching takes place in the classroom and at the offices of companies in the sector located in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Teaching activities include lectures, ex tempore exercises, and exercises. Ex tempore activities will be conducted in the presence of the instructor, who will guide and develop with the students the various phases of compositional analysis. These phases will essentially involve drawing, creating graphic designs, and study models. For ex tempore exercises, drawing and model-making materials must be brought to the classroom and throughout all lessons; these materials will be provided by the instructor on the first day of class.

Classes will be held in classrooms and at industry-related company locations, with workshops or online learning. Regular attendance is required for all classes, as the activity is conducted directly between the student, instructor, and visiting professor, with individual review.

During the course, students will be assessed on individual project activities, according to the assigned assignments. At the end of the course, there will be an exam involving an exhibition of the projects completed during the course.
