Syllabus

D1_The aim of the laboratory, to which the three courses (Architectural Composition, Interior design Tecnology and Interior Architecture) contribute, is to provide knowledge about:
- architectural project theory, with particular attention to contemporary,
- architectural design tools for the design of more or less complex buildings at different scales (including those of interior architecture) in relation to the functional program and the articulation of spaces
- the compositional skills inherent in the organizational and formal logic, according to which the building is defined in its parts and relate to the context

And to provide understanding on:
- Analysis of the existing in its formal and material aspects,
- analysis and representation of the degradation and instability;
- the definition of new functions compatible with the existing (known as "reuse") when new needs for use, but also the sense of place with respect to its history, require transformations in terms of planimetric and spatial modifications, technical installations and structural adaptation, the design of the elements (in addition) that can guarantee the performance of those features.
D2_The design exercise aims to provide the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to a concrete case and context that can be directly observed.
D3_The expected learning outcome is a critical awareness of actions on the existing, conservation and valorization, also in relation to the urban context, including related social and ethical meanings.
D4_An aim of the laboratory is to develop communicative capabilities of the analysis and project operations through drawings, written reports, physical models and through the presentation of the applied solutions and methodologies.
D5_Finally, the aim of the laboratory is the acquisition of abilities to abstract, with respect to the design process implemented in the exercise, operating and learning methodologies applicable to other planning occasions, whether they are didactic proposals for subsequent courses that, in the future, are real professional practice.

Students must have attended the examination of the Architectural Design Laboratory 1 and 2 (pre-requisites provided by the CdS regulation).
Knowledge of architecture representation techniques and the ability to create physical models is required. It is important to have basic knowledge of architecture history, constructive techniques and materials technology.

The architectural design laboratory 3 provides the multidisciplinary contribution of Architectural Composition, Tecnology for interior design and Interior Architecture. It is the first lab in the Master's degree course in Architecture where the project is specifically thought of an intervention on interiors.
Teaching focuses on the project, not as an end in itself but as a tool for working and deepening the three disciplines and for elaborating critical categories and design criteria.
The project area are the houses for the Istrian Dalmatian exiles in Gorizia (Campagnuzza area).
A possible functional program for the area will be discussed during the lessons with the intervention of various stakeholders involved in site management.
Regardless of functional program, this place offers to those who have to design a possible future, different themes of reflection:
- identity (of the city, its architecture and its inhabitants)
- of the limit (in its material and immaterial meanings)
- memory (the history of human events and the material consistency of buildings).

The bibliography of the courses of the Laboratory is available on the Syllabus of the respective modules.

Teaching focuses on the project, not as an end in itself but as a tool for working and deepening the three disciplines and for elaborating critical categories and design criteria.
The project area are the houses built for Istrian Dalmatian exiles.
A possible functional program for the area will be discussed during the lessons with the intervention of various stakeholders involved in site management.
Regardless of functional program, this place offers to those who have to design a possible future, different themes of reflection:
- identity (of the city, its architecture and its inhabitants) and what it represents when one is uprooted from one's own places.
- of the limit and boundary (in material and immaterial meanings) that travellers (including those of knowledge, students) find on their way,
- of memory (of the history of human events and the material consistency of buildings) in reference to the different "refugees" that have succeeded one another in this area.
The aim of the workshop is to provide the acquisition of knowledge related to:
- design theory, with particular attention to its elaboration in the contemporary age,
- architectural design tools at different scales of more or less complex buildings in relation to the functional programme and the articulation of spaces
- compositional techniques inherent in the organisational and formal logics according to which the building is defined in its parts and relates to the context
- problems relating to interior design with particular reference to its technological, functional, formal and usage characteristics and the relationships it establishes with the spatial and environmental context and with that of industry and the market (furniture, lighting, technological and plant engineering equipment, covering and finishing materials).
And to provide understanding on:
- Analysis of the existing in its formal and material aspects,
- analysis and representation of the degradation and instability;
- the definition of new functions compatible with the existing (known as "reuse") when new needs for use, but also the sense of place with respect to its history, require transformations in terms of planimetric and spatial modifications, technical installations and structural adaptation,, the design of the elements (in addition) that can guarantee the performance of those features.
The design exercise aims to provide the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to a concrete case and context that can be directly observed.
The expected learning outcome is a critical awareness of actions on the existing, conservation and valorization, also in relation to the urban context, including related social and ethical meanings.
Finally, the aim of the laboratory is to develop communicative capabilities of the analysis and project operations through drawings, written reports, physical models and through the presentation of the applied solutions and methodologies.

The laboratory includes various teaching methods: lessons, lectures by invited professionals, verification seminar, individual or groups revisions of project works. Site inspections of the project area are planned.

Further information on the program of the three courses in the lab is available on the Syllabus of the respective modules.
Useful materials for the course (layout for final drawing, cartographic and historical materials on the project area, slide or texts related to specific lessons) are available on Moodle on the pages of the individual courses.

- Examination marks are awarded by a grade expressed in thirtieths, which corresponds to the average between the marks in thirtieths of the three modules pertaining to the Laboratory.
See those of the three modules for the modes of verification of learning.

The themes of the workshop, referring to living in transit as a widespread condition in the contemporary world, are part of a broader reflection on the question of equity and spatial justice, on ensuring even for disadvantaged minorities specifically to migrants, quality living conditions that contribute to achieving the goal of Reducing Inequalities.
Another objective of the Agenda whose themes are addressed in the course is Sustainable Cities and Communities, through inclusive and sustainable housing redevelopment.
