Syllabus

At the end of the Engineering Geology 2 module, the student will be able
to calculate the bearing capacity of shallow and deep foundations
through the application of some of the most commonly used theories in
professional practice. He will also have the basic knowledge on the
application of the Standards for Construction (2018) in geotechnical
verifications for shallow and deep foundations, as well as for the
definition of the local seismic response through the subsoil categories

Basic geology and applied geology

Bearing capacity

Shallow foundations
Type of shallow foundations; load eccentricity; computation of the soil
bearing capacity using Terzaghi’s theory and Meyerhof’s theory;
characteristics of the equivalent macro-layer, characteristics of the
breaking wedge; Brinch Hansen’s theory for the computation of the soil
bearing capacity in soils containing groundwaters; computation of the
lithostatic load; loads distribution in depth; Boussinesq and Westergaard
theories on surface load distribution in depths; settlements computation
with the oedometric method, compensated foundation, range
admissibility of the settlements and their course over time.

Deep foundations
Type of deep foundations; types of foundation piles, diameters,
construction methods, characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of bored piles, characteristics, strengths and weaknesses of driven piles,
Terzaghi's theory for calculating the bearing capacity of foundation piles,
Berezantev's theory for calculating the bearing capacity of foundation
piles, theory for calculating the bearing capacity of drilled Bustamante
and Doix micropiles.

Standards for constructions 2018
Local seismic response, introduction to the Standards for construction -
2018, geotechnical verifications on the ultimate limit states for shallow
and deep foundations, subsoil categories according to the NTC 2018.
