Syllabus

Knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to understand thoracic anatomy, various pathologies, diagnostic methods, and surgical techniques in the thoracic field.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Students will be able to apply knowledge to analyze and diagnose patient conditions, and plan pre and post-operative management.
Making judgements: Students will develop the ability to interpret clinical and radiological data, and make appropriate decisions for surgical treatment.
Communication skills: Students will be able to effectively communicate with patients and other healthcare professionals, for proper patient management.
Learning skills: Students will acquire the skills necessary to learn and stay updated in the field of thoracic surgery.

It is recommended that students have already completed courses in anatomy, physiology, and general pathology. Familiarity with the basic principles of general surgery is also preferable.

The course will cover the following topics:

Overview of thoracic anatomy and respiratory and cardiovascular physiology
Principles of diagnostics in thoracic surgery: Radiography, CT, PET, Bronchoscopy, Mediastinoscopy
Benign and malignant diseases of the lung, pleura, diaphragm, mediastinum, and thoracic wall
Surgical techniques: Thoracotomy, VATS (Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery), Robotic surgery
Pre and post-operative management of the thoracic surgical patient
Complications in thoracic surgery

The main reference texts will be "Shields' General Thoracic Surgery" and "Sabiston & Spencer Surgery of the Chest".

The course will cover a wide range of topics, including the anatomy of the thorax, techniques for diagnosing thoracic diseases, surgical indications, operative techniques, postoperative patient management, and surgical complications. Specific diseases such as lung cancer, pneumothorax, pleural effusions, surgical diseases of the thymus, mesothelioma, pleural empyema, and thoracic trauma will be discussed.

The course will be conducted through theoretical lectures, clinical case discussions, practical demonstrations, and clinical internships

The assessment of learning related to this module takes place through a single written exam integrated with the course. The test includes 5 multiple-choice questions with 4 answer options for each question, only one of which is correct. For each correct answer, one point will be awarded, while an incorrect or missing answer will result in a penalty of 0.33 points.
