Knowledge and understanding: Understand the fundamental principles of ship design in all its phases. Know the different types of software that can be applied to assist in ship design. Understand the different areas of use of the software, based on the methodological approach adopted during the design and the size of the vessel under study.
Knowledge and understanding skills applied: being able to choose, based on the methodological approach followed during ship design and the size of the vessel under study, the most effective and convenient set of software.
Making judgements: being able to apply the acquired knowledge to deal with the ship design process in all its disciplines and phases, regardless of the size of the vessel under study.
Communication skills: being able to explain, both in written and oral form, the choices made in carrying out the exercises, motivating the choice of one IT tool rather than another, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.
Ability to learn: knowing how to gather information from textbooks and other materials in order to be able to keep one's knowledge of the software used in common professional practice up-to-date.
Basic knowledge: naval engineering principles, naval architecture, ship construction, marine engineering, marine outfitting, technical drawing.
The progress of IT technologies has made it possible to use increasingly advanced IT tools to support engineering activities. Traditionally these software are categorized into CASM (Computer Aided Synthesis Modelling), CAD (Computer Aided Design), CAE (Computer Aided Engineering), CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing), PMP (Product Model Programs), CIM (Computer Integrated Manufacturing) and CSI (Computer System Integrator). In particular, CAD, CAE and CAM are essential for the daily marine engineering activities and can rightly be considered essential requirements of the cultural and technical background of a marine engineer. In parallel with the use of these basic software in high-level industrial realities, the use of PMP and CIM is also consolidating, while in those of excellence, processes are being launched to update the IT towards the use of CSI extension. In the course of "Naval software laboratory", in order to provide adequate basic knowledge that allows aspiring naval engineers to enter the world of work quickly and effectively, a CAE (RINA Leonardo Hull 2D), a PMP ( BENTLEY Maxsurf) and a CAM (BENTLEY OpenPlant) for common professional use. The assessment of learning outcomes will take place through the development of an exercise that will include the use of all three tools. At the end of the course, hints on advanced IT tools will also be provided.

Given the size of the files not managed by the Moodle2 system, the software used for the exercises will be uploaded in the FILE section of the course Team.
The exam consists of an oral test, which can be accessed after completing a booklet of exercises set up in the classroom together with the teacher. The oral interview will be divided into:
- Two questions regarding the software presented during the lessons (Knowledge and understanding).
- Presentation of the exercises carried out according to the guidelines learned in class and using IT tools used during the classroom exercises (Applied knowledge and understanding). In the presentation, the student will have to justify the choices made independently (Autonomy of judgment and communication skills).
