Knowledge and understanding of basic IMO and national rules and regulations and of their application to ships design and construction. In particular for what concerns the passive fire protection (subdivision of the ship in man vertical zones; fire integrity of bulkheads and decks; fire protection of ship’s spaces in relation of their fire risk) and of its active fire protection (type and characteristics of fire suppression, fire detection and alarm systems). Main principles for design and arrangement of means of escape, their use, type and sizing; type, use and arrangement of lifesaving appliances. Principles and purpose of the evacuation analysis process. Knowledge and methodology of alternative design and arrangements for what concerns deviations from applicable regulations relevant to fire protection and lifesaving appliances. Safe return to port principles. Knowing how to understand, evaluate and mediate the needs of the shipping companies and shipyards with those prescribed by the law.
Basic principles for design, functionality and operation of passenger ships
Passenger ships (with more than 36 pax) safety design 1.0 Introduction to normative requirements. IMO, scope and organization and the normative process. Application of IMO regulation to a ship. 1.1 SOLAS and its Codes (FTP, FSS, LSA, .) and other Conventions (MLC, BWM, COLREG, MARPOL,.. .) 1.2 Flag Administrations: their role and competence and the ones of their R.O. Class notations. 1.3 Port State Control (PSC) inspections and US Coast Guard examinations 1.4 Overview on European and Italian regulation. MED certification. 2.0 Introduction to a g.a.p. of a passenger ship: identification of the spaces, their use and arrangement: machinery spaces; accommodation and service spaces; open decks.3.0 Fire Protection: objectives and functional requirements and general principles 3.1 Main definitions 3.2 Principles of passive fire protection 3.3 Fire load: use of combustible and non-combustible materials 3.4 Active fire protection: fire extinguishing systems 3.5 Fire detection and alarm systems 4.0 Means of escape and evacuation analysis 5.0 Operational requirements 6.0 Fire Alternative design & arrangements 7.0 “Safe return to port” regulations 8.0. Frontal lessons. Any changes to the methods described here, which become necessary to ensure the application of the safety protocols related to the COVID19 emergency, will be communicated on the Department, Study Program and teaching website.
Written exam (1h): questions with multi-response on the topics of the program and 2 exercises (passive fire protection, escape, lifesaving).Oral exam on the topics of the course.
