After studying the following procedures, the student will be able to:
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
• Describe the assessment actions to be carried out before starting the procedure itself;
• Identify the safety principles to be carried out during assistance maneuvers;
• Describe the rationale for the sequence of actions to be performed;
• Describe the risks and complications of the maneuvers, including the methods for their assessment and monitoring.
APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
• Assess any additional risks associated with the procedure (allergies to latex and / or antiseptics / disinfectants);
• Apply diagnostic and therapeutic prescriptions with adequate monitoring and surveillance strategies;
• Identify the appropriate devices based on the clinical situation;
• Transmit all the necessary information to the subject undergoing the procedure, taking into account the clinical situation and the ability to understand;
• Perform the procedures safely;
• Properly dispose of the material used in compliance with the infectious and biological risk;
• Document the procedure on client’s record.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS
• Choose the appropriate PPE and devices to ensure operator safety based on the clinical situation;
• Recognize the conditions that require repeating the procedure;
• Seek the doctor's opinion in case of pathologies that may hinder the execution of the procedures;
• Choose devices / materials based on the clinical situation and the peculiarities of the clients;
• Develop assessment skills in the management of positioned devices;
• Evaluate and intervene in case of complications.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
• Recognize the appropriate settings and timing for customer communications;
• Use the appropriate terminology for effective diagnostic and therapeutic nursing communication based on the interlocutor and his knowledge and skills;
• Evaluate the effectiveness of educational
interventions aimed at the client in relation to the procedure and any precautions at the end of the procedure or for the management of the device.
LEARNING SKILLS
• Identify his/her training needs by planning further learning moments (additional workshops, tutorial sessions);
• Identify suitable sources for professional development based on the latest available guidelines.
For a better understanding of the topics covered in this course, the student should have a basic knowledge of the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary, intestinal, integumentary and musculoskeletal systems.
The course is a prerequisite for the internship exam II.
Study of the sequence of actions and their rationale for the following nursing procedures:
- Techniques and materials for the administration of inhalation therapy
- Techniques and materials for the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous therapy
-Management of intravenous therapy
- Techniques and materials for the management of enterostomies and urostomies
- Nursing management procedures of central venous catheters
- Techniques and materials for the positioning and management of the nasogastric tube
-Techniques and materials for blood cultures
- Techniques and materials for arterial blood gas analysis
The simulation laboratories within the Nursing Degree Course represent, together with the theoretical lessons and clinical training, a relevant learning opportunity. The laboratory is a protected environment, but at the same time a context marked by reality, where simulation guarantees safety and students can increase their skills and knowledge before facing the real clinical environment.
During this course, the student will learn the sequence of actions and their rationale for the following nursing procedures:
- Techniques and materials for the administration of inhalation therapy (Oxygen therapy and aerosol therapy)
- Techniques and materials for the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous therapy
- Management of intravenous therapy: reconstitution of lyophilized drugs, calculations of dilutions, continuous administration with drip systems and infusion pumps.
- Techniques and materials for performing standard blood cultures and time to positivity
- Techniques and materials for the management of enterostomies and urostomies
- Nursing management procedures of central venous catheters (cvc, picc port a cath)
- Techniques and materials for the positioning and management of the nasogastric tube (nutritional, therapeutic and evacuative purposes)
- Techniques and materials for performing arterial blood gas analysis
The teaching includes laboratory activities in small groups, with exercises on dummies and dedicated simulators, role play and minimum recourse to frontal teaching, integrated with individual study according to the indications of the teachers/tutors
The teacher could administer tests at the end of each topic to verify learning and facilitate the study of the subject.
The power point presentations relating to the teaching units can be found on the moodle@units and Microsoft Teams IT platforms
Through an oral exam with open questions lasting approximately 15 minutes on the topics covered and simulated in the practical laboratory.
The evaluation will be Approved or Not approved if the student demonstrates adequate knowledge, reasoning ability and execution of the procedure.
