Knowledge and understanding: Students should acquire knowledge about the clinical presentation, the pathophysiological mechanisms, the diagnostic-therapeutic pathway, and complications of diseases of surgical interest both in oncologic and in inflammatory and benign field. Students should know the prevention campaigns for major oncology pathologies, the importance of early diagnosing and management of patient suffering from surgical disease.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Students should be able to apply his knowledge on the rational basics of surgical treatment and details of the common surgical techniques by pointing out patient's response and nursing management.
Making judgements: Students should be able to use the acquired knowledge to develop a personal judgment and decision making approach and an independent critical view of the themes proposed in the course. In addition, students should be able to plan a proper nursing care for each clinical framework treated with special attention to post-surgical rehabilitation care and the continuity of care after discharge.
Communicative skills: By the end of the course, students will be able to use a proper and appropriate technical-professional terminology to communicate health information effectively, expecially in surgical field.
Learning skills: By the end of the course, students will prove to know the main themes of the course and to be able to prepare for the exam by planning and managing the study individually based on the content of the lessons, the teaching material delivered and the sources suggested for further study
Basic knowledge of normal human anatomy and biology
Provide to the student knowledge of surgical diseases. Their acquisition, based on knowledge of the pathophysiological mechanisms, will allow the student to formulate a correct interpretation of the symptoms, to speculate on differential diagnosis, achieve a correct nursing management of operated patients

Class lectures and continuous mutual interaction between student and teacher. The student is encoraged to participate actively in the lesson and to elaborate a critical analysis that leads to autonomy of judgment and practical management of the clinical case.

An oral exam with an open question and takes 15-20 minutes on average. The oral exam consists of a verbal discussion about the topics treated in the course in order to check student's ability to identify the major clinical presentations of disease of surgical interest. The knowledge and understanding of the therapeutic approch and diagnostic test will be verified, as well.
The grading system applied is: (18-24): sufficient or fair knowledge of the subject, adequate mastery of the technical language; (25-27): good or very good knowledge of the subject, technical language proficiency, essential ability to connect the themes addressed during the course; (28-30 with honours): excellent knowledge of the subject and technical language proficiency, autonomous critical and analytical skills, and ability to apply acquired knowledge to concrete clinical scenarios
