Syllabus

Objective.
The educational objective of the course is to provide students with the main psychological aspects of cancer.
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
By the end of the course, the student should know and understand the relevant topics in the field of psycho-oncology, with particular relevance to the context of health care and the role of the nurse.
D2 - Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
The student should be able to demonstrate skill in constructing logical relationships between proposed models and their application.
D3 - Autonomy of judgement.
The student should be able to make critical judgments about key aspects of psycho-oncology and their integration and application. The development of this ability will be fostered through active participation in lectures and the ability to individually revise and assimilate the content covered.
D4 - Communication Skills.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to describe the proposed models and constructs using appropriate linguistic means and to present the content of the programme clearly and critically.
D5 – Learning skills
At the end of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the topics covered.

The course covers and analyses some relevant topics in the field of psycho-oncology:
[1] Psychosomatics and the biopsychosocial model of disease;
[2] Basic communication skills and the helping relationship;
[3] Difficult communication in oncology with the patient and family;
[4] Psychological impact and mental health problems of healthcare staff s;
[5] Psychological reactions during illness phases and adaptation to illness
[6] Distress and mental disorders associated with cancer;
[7] Assessment tools in psycho-oncology.
[8] Psychological interventions and psychotherapy.

Course slides and additional materials (scientific articles in Italian or English), which will be deepened in the lessons, will be provided by the teacher.



Lectures (using slides and short videos), group activities, when possible through the presentation of case studies.

Written test with multiple-choice questions and/or open-ended questions. Registration for the exam is only available through the computer systems provided by the University. Registration by phone or email to the teacher is not permitted.

This class addresses issues closely related to one or more of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development goals. Specifically related to health and well-being by teaching the promotion of mental health and well-being.
